This Weekend
Apr 29th, 2009 by admin

I had the pleasure of going antler hunting this weekend. They’re very easy to sneak up on, never hear you coming. No, antler hunting has nothing to do with actual hunting. Its more on the line of hunting for socks than it is hunting for deer. Socks that are the same color as the ground. And scattered miles apart wherever deer may have been this winter. Which we can only guess at. Fortunately, antlers unlike socks still have value even if you don’t have a matched set. This deserves a “yay”.

Anyway, I needed to get out of town. I’m a very active person, and I love going places and experiencing novel things. Sitting in the same places doing the same things day after day wear on me eventually. I have a great set up on my daily life now, but it really doesn’t matter. I just need to get away sometimes, or I feel like I’m living in a bubble. A very small bubble.

I tried to take pictures while I was over there, and I will post some soon, but it made me realize something. Eastern Oregon can’t really be captured in pictures. Individuals photos make it look dusty (which it is) and col (which it is) and clearly desert (also is). But there is a lot they can’t convey. They don’t show the way the wind blows, which is somehow different from the valley. They don’t convey how hot your face can get from a huge fire, while your butt is still an ice cube. It doesn’t share the crackling and sizzling of sap from a knotty juniper stump. There is just something simple and delightful about the place. Over there you can just exist, and that somehow seems to be enough.

Anyway, pictures will be up soon. Some very cute cows who did NOT want to move out of the road, thank you very much, and me with an antler I found. I think there’s some kooky looking trees too. I might post them. Have a good day!
